Boy, can London do the Olympics right or what? Olympic Park is decorated with permanent poem monuments like the sweet-looking one by Caroline Bird pictured here and the Tennyson one pictured below—3-D verses that are part of the Winning Words initiative run by U.K. National Poetry Day founder William Sieghart who has said he wants to "carpet our nation with poetry." But that's not all. Winning Words has also designed an interactive poetry game to go with the Olympics, and there was an Olympic poetry competition that received over 2,000 entries from kids in London. Furthermore, on July 23, London mayor Boris Johnson recited (in ancient Greek as well as English) "Ode for the London Olympics 2012," a poem commissioned from Oxford scholar Armand D'Angour who composed one for the Athens Olympics back in 2004 as well. Add to all this the Poetry Olympics held in London in late June, and you've got one heckuva Po-lympic scene going on across the pond....

Heading to Texas: P&PC at MLA's Annual Convention

The good news is that, after five months of being based at the Library of Congress in the nation's capital, P&PC has finally and safely returned to its home office in Salem, Oregon. It's good to be home, and we're pretty exhausted, but as fortune would have it, we're promptly flying out later this week to attend and take part in the Modern Language Association's annual convention , being held this year in Austin, Texas. Loving Comic Strips, Theatre, Movies, Poetry and Sex: The Correspondence of Ray Bradbury and William R. Cox

P&PC recently spent some time at the University of Oregon's Knight Library digging around the papers of Ethel Romig Fuller —a widely-published (though not well remembered) modern poetry advocate in the Pacific Northwest who was named Oregon's third (and first woman) poet laureate, a position she held from 1957 until her death in 1965. We can guarantee that you will eventually be hearing more about Fuller from P&PC , but this week we thought we'd share something else we came upon at the Knight: a June 6, 1979 letter from Ray Bradbury to William R. Cox, and Cox's response of June 22 later that month, both of which are in the library's William R. Cox papers . Neither Bradbury nor Cox (who wrote stories for the pulps before moving West to write screenplays, television scripts, and 80 novels) are associated with poetry by most stretches of the imagination, and yet, as these letters suggest, poetry was nevertheless part and parcel of the pulpy world they lived i...
